Fen Pattern: Alsn's Magical Unicorn Fen!

A sweet and magical gal, Alsn's choice of fabric to test out the Fen couldn't be more appropriate--unicorn lawn! She found she wanted a more fitted waist to flatter her figure, and we love the simple modification she did. An elastic casing was added at the waist seam on just the back of the dress, which draws the shape in a bit for a less boxy fit. Here is Alsn with more on her unicorn Fen!

Fabric: Unicorn voile from Sara Lawson's Fantasia collection (sadly sold out, but check out these beautiful voiles), 3 1/4 yards, 1/3 yd pocket fabric
Modifications: added elastic casing on the back waist of the dress, used contrasting pocket fabric

Tell about choosing the fabric for your Fen.

I went to the professionals. I walked in to Fancy Tiger Crafts and asked Miranda which fabric to make the Fen out of. I trust her with these things. We decided it needed to be something with good drape for my curvy shape, so once we narrowed that down it was easy- the one with unicorns!!! Then the Cotton and Steel voile was just a nice pop of color to add to the pocket backs for even more whimsy.

Any modifications?

I added a casing for elastic to the back to pull the waist in a bit more which gave me more definition. This way, I get to show off my curves and my sewing skillz!

What was your favorite thing about making this?

I liked the simplicity of putting the Fen together- with very little fuss you get a new dress!

What other fabrics do you think would be great for this pattern?

I saw the Alice in Wonderland Liberty lawn and it got me thinking...I'm all over that chic. I also have been ogling Tigress Alison's double gauze. It looks so comfy!

Where have you been wearing/how will you be styling your Fen? I've worn mine out to a few shindigs and house parties and I have to say that I have gotten a lot of compliments so far ('cause no one else is wearing my dress at the party!) I like being able to say it's a local designer who made the pattern which leads to good conversations about small business and the "Keep Colorado Local" movement. The unicorns keep it light, though. For styling, I wear a thin belt, a shawl and some cute oxfords and the Fen does the rest! Shazam!
