Freia Ombre Cowley

For a long time now we have been carrying KnitWhit’s beautiful, hand painted bulky, lace and sport weight Freia yarns. Just recently we also started carrying the fingering weight version in both semi-solid colors and their signature subtle ombré. The generous 430 yard ombré shawl skein is perfect for this fun, colorblocked cowl! I jumped right in and knit it in just a few days. Lauren was kind enough to model it for me.

Pattern: Cowley by Helena Bristow of Oink Pigments
Materials: 1 skein KnitWhits’ Freia Ombre Shawl Ball in South Beach
Size Made: Small
Modifications: None

This luscious U.S. sourced, 100% merino wool knits up so much softer than you would ever imagine when you feel it in its ball. Knitting this fingering weight yarn on size 9 needles seemed much to large to me at first, but the fibers bloom so much as you knit with it ends up feeling like a fluffy cloud when you are finished.

While I do love the fluffy feel of Freia, the main wow factor for me is definitely the hand painted, super long color runs that bleed from one to the next. Part of the reason I was able to knit this up so fast is because I couldn’t wait to see the next color change. I just kept knitting and knitting until I got to the next one.

There are two sizes for this cowl. The small size has 2 triangular pieces (you pick up stitches on one side and seam the other side together) and the large has 4 triangles. I made the smaller size and just knit right through my skein without changing colors for the second triangle as it recommends. Since this yarn has a subtle color change throughout, it worked out perfectly.

It would be equally fun to make the larger size cowl alternating between an ombré skein and a semi-solid color. I love this little neck warmer for fall, but sometimes you really need to bundle up, so I love that it has the option!
