Jaime & Amber's One Yard Wonder Tops

Two masked women in flowery tops

We are all enamored with the new 108” wide back fabrics designed by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society. These bold and beautiful prints are traditionally meant to make quilt backs simple by eliminating any need for piecing. However, these happen to be made from a cotton sateen with gorgeous hand and drape which--of course--made us think of garments. We decided to take on the challenge of finding out the answer to this question: What can you make out of a 1-yard cut of 108” wide fabric?

Jaime’s Simple + Bold Remy Raglan

Pattern: Remy Raglan by Sew House Seven
Fabric: 1 yard Beam Wide Back in Dark Teal
Size Made: 6
Modifications: Shortened sleeve by 2”

I wanted to make something simple that showcased this huge print without cutting it up. I chose the Remy Raglan, which is a new pattern from Sew House Seven. There are two versions of this top included in the pattern, and I chose the first version with ¾ length sleeves. This version is a simple top, while the second version adds more interest with a split front and button closure at the front of the neck.

Version 1 comes together so fast and easy, which makes it the perfect beginner pattern! The pattern includes instructions to finish all seams using French seams, so you end up with a tidy, professionally-finished top. One yard of 108” fabric is more than ample fabric for this top, and I was able to use the leftover fabric for my bias neck binding with tons to spare for a quilt project or some masks. The only mod I made was to shorten the sleeve after i finished. I decided I preferred this length, which was a very simple mod to make, after the fact. Overall, this is a simple, easy-fitting top that really lets the print shine!

Amber’s Flowery Cuff Top

Pattern: The Assembly Line Cuff Top
Fabric: 1 yard Bloom Wide Back in Shell
Notions: 1 yard of 2” Elastic
Size Made: M
Modifications: None

I’ve been really wanting to make the Cuff Top from the moment we started carrying this pattern from The Assembly Line. It’s such a simple pattern that utilizes 2” elastic to finish the sleeve hems, creating a pop of interest on an otherwise easy-peasy, boxy top. There was plenty of fabric in a single yard of 108” wide to make this top.

This pattern was so quick to put together! The pattern can be made with a seam down the front and back, or it can be cut on the fold. I chose to leave the seam at the front and back, giving it a little more of a patchwork look. Cutting your pieces on the fold would make this top even quicker to make, not to mention you may prefer a large print like this without a seam.

The only slight issue I had was sewing the final seams of the elastic cuffs. It was a bit hard to stretch and sew the elastic at the same time. I used our basic 2” elastic, which ended up looking great, but next time I’ll try our 40mm Soft Waistband Elastic for the sleeves. It has a bit of a gentler stretch, which should make it easier to manage the stretching and sewing on those seams.

The result? I love my new vibrant, flower power top! I am so glad I finally made the Cuff Top pattern, and already plan to make it again in some of our solid rayons and fashion fabrics for everyday wardrobe basics.

Your tops look great. I have some funky wide back material. You’ve inspired me to make something as well.
