Kim's Minty Ruth Quilt

Materials used (fabric, notions, kits, etc.):  Various Quilting cottons, including gem in green, bramble in dark mint, fern in pink, mushrooms in pink, floral lace in ballet, and others for the accent colors. Add it up in Copper Metallic for the main, Woodgrain in mushroom from Effie’s Woods for main contrast, menagerie for the backing, painted gingham in polar for the binding, Quilter’s Dream Cotton Select Batting- twin size

The second the Ruth Quilt pattern came into the shop, I was itching to make one! It has so many elements that spoke to me; fat quarter and/or scrap friendly, interesting sashing, and blocks turned on point. It proved itself to be a fun, speedy make!

Lately I’ve been super inspired by the spearminty greens on the quilting cotton shelves in the shop, so I immediately gravitated towards them first. Pairing them with pinky peaches and a nice natural cotton backdrop with the smallest hint of copper metallic were easy choices. For added drama, I went with a lovely dark backing fabric that pulled in the colors on the front of the quilt. I think the resulting effect is a perfect spring quilt! This pattern calls for 20 different prints to make up the blocks, in addition to two colors for the background and sashing, so there’s so much room to play here! I’m also envisioning a more monochrome approach, or using a fat quarter bundle from a favorite fabric line to get a really colorful quilt. Really, any option would be lovely. 

Because I did go for a more limited palette, I arranged my blocks to play up a sort of plaid like effect, and I’m quite pleased with the finished look. The straight line quilting also really adds to the effect. Plus, for the first time I tried out the Quilter’s Dream Cotton Select batting. I’ve always used a very low loft batting for quilting before, but I must say, I adore how squishy and plush the mid loft is! Fully cannot wait to do more with this batting, I’m a convert. 

Maybe I’m crazy, but one of my favorite things in quilting is applying the binding. It really can make or break a quilt in my mind, and the perfect minty gingham I went with was exactly what I was dreaming of for my Ruth quilt. I went and paired it with one of my favorite quilts trends- big stitch binding with perle cotton. The resulting effect I think just adds so much personality, and is really simple to do. Plus, my cat loves it when I’m working on a quilt on my lap, and obviously that’s the most important thing. 

Personally, I’m excited to have this pattern in my repertoire. It’s definitely a fun one to put together, and again, there’s just so many ways you can play with color and layout to make each top unique, I really can’t imagine getting bored of this one.
