Mild Woman Resist

Mild Woman's Resist Hat is a project I needed in my life as soon as I saw it. The classic shape is lovely, and the strong message of empowerment is irresistible.

It couldn't have come at a better time. The last couple years have been a rollercoaster of emotions: discouragement, anger, and hope. One of the most positive things during this time has been the feeling of community and the renewed desire to evaluate the impacts of my own life.

A big part of my life is crafts and there are so many reasons I craft. When I first learned to knit, it was a method of self-care--time to quiet my mind while making useful things I could be proud to wear or gift. The other reason, that has become increasingly important to me, is I am able to support companies who are making sustainable products with people-friendly practices while avoiding disposable fast-fashion. As I move away from purchased garments and toward a self-made wardrobe, I am able to use my purchasing power for positive impact.

As I knit the Resist Hat, I thought a lot about this, but also about the other ways I can do good in my life. Making this hat was a bit of a meditation, the act of each stitch reinforcing my determination to be thoughtful with my choices, use my voice for good, and take care of myself so I can do it all over again tomorrow.

The Resist Hat pattern supports not only the designers behind Mild Woman, but part of the proceeds go to The Collective PAC, an organization dedicated to building Black political power, an important step in making sure we have equality in representation. Check out the website to see more about the challenge of underrepresentation and the goal for political equity.

The yarn I used is from Jamieson + Smith, a company that is integral in supporting the crofting and fiber traditions of Shetland. Over 700 Shetland crofters sell their yearly clip to J+S, who create yarn and finished goods from the heritage breed wool. Read more on their website about the positive impacts of this company on their local economy and ecosystem.

This year, Jaime and I will be working hard on making Fancy Tiger Crafts operate in a more sustainable and socially conscious way, so stay tuned to hear more about it!
