New Constellation Block Patterns: Double Constellation Quilt

This Friday, we are excited to be releasing 12 small pattern cards for modern patchwork blocks! These 20" blocks are based on the twelve constellations of the zodiac. With a minimal aesthetic and simple construction, the blocks capture the magic of the celestial. I'll be sharing projects each day this week showcasing some of the ways to use the blocks.

Pattern: Cancer and Taurus Constellation Blocks - 2 blocks then made into a 90" x 90" quilt top
Fabric: Japanese Double Gauze - Oxford Blue (3 yards), FreeSpirit Solid - Raven (5 yards)

One of my favorite ways to use the blocks is a double constellation quilt. Combining two constellations in a queen sized quilt makes a beautiful gift for a partner, a wedding or anniversary. I made this queen sized quilt with the Taurus block for my astrological sign, and the Cancer block for my husband Eddie's astrological sign.

By placing the two 20" blocks within a solid background, it it creates the look of two constellations suspended in the night sky. This entire project is really fun--the blocks themselves are simple to construct and worked in a small scale. They are satisfyingly methodical to put together. Then, once the blocks are assembled, the background patchwork is large, fast and sew-as-you-like.

For this quilt I used a variety of small scraps of yellow for the stars, creating an almost twinkling effect. The background fabrics are two off-black solids. They are almost the same color, but one is a double gauze and one is a quilting cotton, so they reflect light a little differently, giving a subtle texture to the background.

I'm so thrilled that this Double Constellation quilt will be displayed at Quiltcon this weekend, so look for it--as well as me and Jaime--in person there!

Check back tomorrow, I'll be sharing a smaller #ConstellationBlocks project for the home!
