Victoria's Knerd String Lake Reed

I had originally knit this skein of Knerd String Worsted as another hat but ended up ripping it out because it was huge! I tend to be a loose knitter and just didn’t pay enough attention to realize how big the hat was getting. Oops! However, I loved working with the yarn (a joy both times), so I have no complaints. Knerd String knits up really nicely, is easy to work with, and I love the color variations it has. The different colors from the dye process really show up in the finished product! Did I mention this yarn is soft and didn’t cause a forehead breakout or itch after wearing it all day at the store?!

Pattern: Lake Reed by Asita Krebs (free Ravelry download)
Materials: 1 skein Knerd String Worsted in Shade 1 of 50
Size Made: one size fits all... really! I saw a sample that fit everyone’s head who tried it on. The cables and ribbing make it a very stretchy hat.
Modifications?: yes! I have a tiny head so did not repeat the main body pattern twice the way it called. I knit once all the way through & knit to the 6th row as indicated to move on to the next segment. I also decided to cast the full 120 stitches instead of the original 110 and then adding 10 after knitting the rib. I didn’t do the tubular ribbed cast on either... I gave up after watching a zillion YouTube videos and ended up doing a long tail cast on. I basically did this easy and lazy way!

I spent a couple of hours a day working on Lake Reed, nothing intense, and finished in about a week. It's a great hat for anyone looking to get better at cables and up their hat game. The cable pattern is pretty easy to follow once you get a feel for how Asita writes her patterns. One gentleman, who finished the hat before I did, mentioned having to read through the directions a few times before beginning the pattern and I found this to be true too. Once you knit a few rounds of the cable repeats though it becomes really easy to knit and remember the pattern repeats. It was great for watching a show that I was actually trying to pay attention to (Alias Grace- SO good!)!

I started knitting this as part of Fabric Bliss’ latest knit-a-long (they still get together twice a month despite having shut their doors this fall). I unfortunately was out of town for the meet ups, so had to figure this pattern out on my own, but I’m excited to attend the knit-a-long wrap up to see everyone’s hats!!

I think this will be this season’s ‘go to’ hat! I’m growing my short hair out and can see myself wearing this to hide bad hair days (more like bad hair stages... I somehow end up sporting a mullet at some point!).
