All Cast-On for the Basic Ribbed Beanie!

The Basic Ribbed Beanie is the newest pattern in our line-up, and is an instant classic!
Two people in rib-knit beanies stand with their backs to the camera. Their long hair cascades out from under the backs of the hats as they look through the boughs of an evergreen tree and out toward a hiking adventure.
It’s both our simplest hat pattern and the winter wardrobe staple everyone needs. Written in five sizes, from Baby to Large Adult, you’ll be able to keep yourself and everyone you love warm and cozy with this effortless knit.

A series of rib-knit beanies with folded brims are laid out on a black table top. They are made in a variety of sizes and textures but share the same pleasingly simple construction. They seem to be laid out like eager pupils before a teacher as the nose of a sheepdog appears to lean in to inspect them.

Almost any yarn that strikes your fancy can be used for this pattern. It is written for your choice of either Bulky weight yarn or DK weight yarn. You can even hold two strands of yarn together for either version, which means worsted-weight yarns or lace weight yarns are also options! This is truly a choose-your-own-adventure hat!

Amber and Marta stand back to back against a grey brick wall. Amber makes a silly face and wears a bulky, olive-hued ribbed hat. Marta has a laughing smile and wears a finer knit, flame red-orange ribbed hat, with a fuzzy texture.

This hat is perfect for beginning knitters looking to level up their brand-new knit and purl skills. So perfect, in fact that we are now teaching this hat in our Knitting 201 class. Even better, this stretchy knit is also extremely forgiving to hiccups in gauge and tension, and will come out looking fantastic every time!

We’re so excited about this versatile, simple knit that we've been knitting up a storm already! Here are some of our favorites...

A close up of Amber wearing a handknit ribbed beanie—a bulky boucle yarn gives the hat a soft, sherpa-like texture. She wears a coppery brown and white colorwork yoked sweater.

Marigiold Serenity Boucle
Pattern: Basic Ribbed Beanie: Bulky Version
Yarn: 1 Skein Knit Collage Serenity Boucle in Marigold
Size Made: 4
Notes: I found this sticky yarn needed to be knit on a needle size several sizes down to achieve gauge. I love the sherpa-fleece look of the fabric from this yarn!

Jaime looks down, smiling. She wears a dark blue-purple and black marled ribbed beanie, and a sap-green handknit sweater.

Heirloom Double-Stranded Beanie

Notes: When using two skeins of Heirloom held together, you'll have enough yarn to complete two adult sized hats!

AJ stands in front of a white brick wall, wearing a pea-green ribbed beanie.
