Modifications: no pocket interfacing, serged the inside edge of the waistband facing instead of turning it under and made hem facings for a wider hem.
I was interested in making the Emerson Pants out of the Silk/Rayon Velvet because I thought it was the perfect pattern to showcase the beautiful drape of the fabric. I have been eyeing the velvet for a while now and thought now was the time to introduce it into my wardrobe! I really believe in either letting the fabric be the "star of the show" or the design. The Emerson Pants have a simple design without too many details or top stitching. I think the front pleats show off the fabric in a really lovely way.
It has been a long time since I worked with velvet and I remember why it has the reputation that it does. You really can't fight with it...it will win! Some tips and tricks I remembered from my days in bridal sewing are:
- cut out using a rotary cutter,
- use a walking foot lengthen your stitch to 3mm
- and use lots of pins!
Because the velvet is messy, I decided to serge all my long seams before construction. That way it was easier to handle, and I could open up my seams to reduce bulk. One good thing is that you can't really iron velvet, and that was a step I was happy to skip!
I'm excited to wear these pants at some holiday and New Year parties. They are just right for a dressy or casual event!
