Lauren's Short Row Sweater

As soon as I saw the Over, Under, Repeat yarn from Shutters & Shuttles I knew I had to make something (anything!) with it. It’s the perfect lightweight yarn for a summer knit and when I came across the free Short Row Sweater pattern from Purl Soho, I knew it would be a perfect match for this subtle and delicate yarn.

Yarn: 2 skeins of OUR silk noil by Shutters & Shuttles in Ash
Size Made: XS/S (34” chest circumference)
Modifications: Knit on size 4 needles & added length to the sweater by not knitting 1 between wrap and turns

One of the most difficult parts of this project was choosing a color from the OUR line. They’re all amazing! I’m generally a neutral knitter, so Ash seemed like the obvious choice with its subtle reddish/purple variation.

OUR was wonderful to knit with and created an amazing texture. This was my first time knitting with something other than wool or linen, and I think I’ve found a new favorite fiber.

One thing I love about this yarn is the way it adds such drape and flow to a garment. It’s perfect for that slouchy, but polished, look.

The pattern is knit almost entirely in short rows. After reading feedback from other makers on this sweater, I decided to add some length to the front. I love my knits to be oversized and cozy so I skipped the knit 1 before the wrap and turn at the end of each row. Gradually, this will add length to the front of the sweater as your work your way across which is great if you want a little less ‘crop’ to your top.

The trickiest part of this sweater was seaming together the left and right backs. Once you fold the sweater ends over each other, you have to seam the right and back together. The seaming requires you to purl these two rows together before you can attach them to the front via Kitchener stitch. It was a little awkward to hold them together at first but once you get the hang of it it’s easy as pie!

I’m so pleased with the way this sweater turned out. It’s a great way to add some hand knits into your summer wardrobe. The flow and ease of this garment would look great with some high waisted shorts in warmer weather or with a long sleeve shirt underneath on cooler days.
