Amber's Jaipur Block-Print Wilder

Newly arrived in the shop: gorgeous hand-printed organic lawn fabrics from Rajasthan. This region in northern India is known for hand block-printed fabric. Intricate florals and patterns are stamped with carved wooden blocks, sometimes many layers of stamping per design. Jaime and I recently visited this part of India, and brought back some of the most irresistible, very limited fabrics for the shop.

Wilder Top in hand block printed fabric

I love these airy organic prints from Jaipur, and knew they would be perfect for the Wilder Top, a project that's been at the top of my list to make.

Pattern: Wilder Gown by Friday Pattern Co
Fabric: 1-3/4 yards Organic Cotton Single Border Block Print, Earth
Size: Small
Modifications: sewed a wider hem

The Wilder is such an easy and quick make, that this came together in just a few hours. I went down a size on the pattern, like I did for the dress I made recently. I like the fit of it, but for the top version I could use a tad more room in the hips. Next time I will grade out in that area a little bit.

Many of the block-print fabrics have a beautiful border running along one selvedge. I cut my neck tie so that it shows the border at both ends. The little pop of contrast is perfect! I decided to sew a wider hem at the bottom of my Wilder, increasing it to about 1 1/2". This means my top is a tad bit shorter, but also adds a bit of weight to the hem, which I like.

This soft, cotton top is absolutely a dream to wear! It's high neck is super cute under sweaters and coats, and I can't wait to style it a million ways this winter, while I dream of warm and beautiful India.

I’m thinking you won the “first to cut into the India fabric” prize! Can’t believe you finished a top already. It came out so cute! I especially love that you used the border on the neck ties.
