There’s nothing like the change of season into summer that makes me inspired to sew. After a very cool and rainy spring, we are finally here in linen-dress-weather and I am ready in my new Austin Dress!

I was excited to see this new pattern recently released by one of my faves Grainline Studio. This dress caught my eye because of its simple and flattering shape mixed with cute details like a keyhole front closure and button closures down each side. The patch pockets and full, gathered waist are both part of view B - you can make a slimmer, straight skirt option with view AThis a close up shot of the front of Jaime's Austin Dress with the key hole detailThis pattern came together smoothly. Grainline patterns are very well written and this one was no exception. The neck and arms are finished with bias tape and the last step is the side seam button closure. I was most nervous for this--sewing 16 button holes and buttons, but my Janome DC1050 performed like a champ and powered through them all without any hitches. Jaime stands in front of a white brick wall wearing her Austin Dress in an emerald color. She stands sideways so that the button details on the side of the dress are visible. My only regret for this is that I wish I had sized down based on the finished measurements to a size 6-- this dress is a bit large in the armholes for me. I tried to compensate for this by placing my buttons as far over as possible to tighten up the side seams which was helpful. Because of the fullness of the gathered skirt – you really don’t need to worry about the hip measurement, which was what placed me in a size 8-- there’s plenty of room! It would be better to focus on fitting the upper portion of the dress and prioritize the bust measurement for this view of the Austin. Jaime stands in front of a white brick wall wearing her Austin Dress. She has her hands behind her back. Overall, I love the saturated color and style of this dress and am excited to take it out on our next 90+ degree day. Thanks summer for the sewing push I needed! Jaime stands in front of a white brick wall wearing her Austin Dress.
