Jaime's Soiree Sweater

Soirée has been in my knitting queue since it first debuted in the Summer 2017 Pom Pom Magazine, and I finally made it! There are so many things I love about this sweater, from the marling of yarns to the subtle cabled texture to the shape. Here are the deets on my new Soirée pullover!

Pattern: Soirée by Emily Foden from Knits About Winter
Yarn: Woolberry Mohair (3 skeins) held with Madelinetosh Prairie (2 skeins)
Size Made: 2 (45 1/2")
Modifications: None

I love marling yarns. Marl is usually executed by holding two yarns together, although you can purchase yarns that are already marled by spinning two or more colors together. This sweater calls for holding two lace-weight yarns together, however you could also just knit it in one dk-weight yarn. The sample sweater was knit using a strand of mohair with a strand of lace-weight wool, and I loved the subtle mohair halo effect. Last winter, we had a trunk show with Woolberry Yarn Co., and I fell in love with and purchased this Woolberry Berry Mohair in the deepest purple, Homemade Jam.

This yarn is a luxe blend of mohair and silk. Lucky you (and us!), we are now stocking Woolberry Berry Mohair here at the shop along with their Berry DK. The second yarn I chose was a pale blue/lavender lace weight single ply from Madeline Tosh, Prairie in Charcoal (out of stock currently). Holding these two yarns together creates a beautiful depth of color and texture. I love it.

This sweater is knit from the bottom up, splitting to make the top, and then picking up and knitting the sleeves. There are two cable patterns up each side of the sweater: a large cable motif and smaller honeycomb at the side seam that continues down the sleeves. The cables were simple enough to memorize and kept the knitting of this otherwise plain sweater interesting.

I'm so pleased with the result. The simple boxy shape, the mohair halo, the color, the cables: all the elements come together to create one of my current favorite sweaters. I will only have a month or so to wear this as spring is on its way, but I've already got a wardrobe staple ready for next fall. So so great!

This is amazing! I have this book, but this gives me a new angle on this sweater, and it’s now in my queue.
